Eating Well

America is a rich country with abundant and varied food. But walk into any supermarket and you could buy a cart full of "food" without further feeding a sheet of plywood, and containing a multitude of unpronounceable man made ingredients. Careful choices are necessary to ensure that you feed your family and in a manner that meets your nutritional needs, and not cause health problems down the road.

You can count on our government to achieve "new dietary guidelines" a few years in various geometric shapes. They have their good sides. But good old common sense is a reliable guide when choosing your diet.

Eat a wide variety of foods. Your body needs many trace elements and minerals, and the best way to get them is by choosing many different foods. Apples and bananas are good, but how about kiwi, mangoes, pears, grapes, cherries.

Eat together. As much as you can, choose foods closest to their original state as possible. Choose a baked potato chips or fries. A fresh apple on the apple pie. A lean pork chop on the sausage. Each step of the transformation undergone by a food drains nutrients, and often includes ingredients that you're better off without. Look at this box of instant dinner (seven fortified nutrients!) You plan to put in the cart and try to imagine how everything away from its original state in this table is. If you're really brave, read the ingredient list. (Hint: most of all fresh foods do not come with lists of ingredients ...)

Eat local and organic food. Organic food leaves pesticides, herbicides, and most of the artificial ingredients in the picture. Fresh local food is likely, less processed, and in season. Never tasted a strawberry Ecuador in February? The eyes say WOW! The language says ICK. Strawberries grown in your region will be available only seasonally, but when they are they will be delicious.

Eat colorful foods. It appears that the more the color of your fruits and vegetables, the more nutrients they provide. Look red peppers, red cabbage, dark green lettuce, and blueberries. Instead of mashed potatoes and cauliflower with chicken breast, choose a yam, broccoli, and agree a chicken breast. But perhaps the salmon? Cheetos and grape soda do not count.

Do not eat fake food. If replacing the word "appears somewhere on the packaging, think twice. It is true that you should not eat much sugar. But sugar is worse than false. What a little honey? The Butter is good in moderation. ... Fake butter is not food. It is water, and there's juice, even beer time honored and wine. But what kind of food is pop? I can not think of a fake food that would be a wiser choice than his counterpart authentic.

In your supermarket, the best place to find a variety of whole, fresh food and colorful is on the edges. Produce counter, meat counter and dairy products. Dart in the middle lanes as little as possible for the Kleenex and a birthday card maybe. No Cheetos.
