Healthy Classroom Snacks

Healthy Classroom SnacksAre Healthy Organic School Meals on the increase?

Jamie Oliver's campaign to improve school dinners has galvanized politicians and parents. Even the Prime Minister was involved, saying that if changes are made, it will only be a matter of months before British health, education and agriculture could be affected for the better. It could be one of the biggest food revolutions that England has ever known. What is needed now is real commitment to this change and the central government funds to back it up.

In a reply by Jamie Oliver school dinner revolution, the Prime Minister also said that school kitchens will be rebuilt and equipped so that food dishes can be cooked from scratch, while the dinner ladies are given culinary training to help them create a tempting menu.

In fall 2006, school meals in England will now exclude chips, chocolate, soft drinks and meat of poor quality. Schoolchildren are served at least two servings of fruit and vegetables at every meal and fried food will be limited to two servings per week. Meals high in salt and fat from the school canteen are also prohibited.

From the perspective of parents, many people want better school meals for their children and exchange of junk food to both local and organic food costs, but there were photos in national newspapers of some parents to take orders for dinner at the school gates and go and buy hamburgers, chips and other unhealthy food and then delivered to their children and others. This is clearly undermining what Jamie Oliver and the Prime Minister trying to do at school, they must wear a uniform and comply with certain rules, why cannot include the consumption of green foods and healthy? When they arrive home, they can wear and eat what they want. Its not going to kill them to eat 5 healthy meals per week is it? Wake up! This reminds me of Ian Wright (famous former football player for Arsenal UK) television program recently about children unhealthy, he tried to make her to engage in exercise to reduce their rate of Obesity and when he struggled, he asked their parents to set an example ... .. many of them refused!

Back to healthy meals again ... The Soil Association is encouraging the use of organic and local produce in school meals by running a power supply for the workshop of life in the schools concerned. This is a one day workshop for key stage two pupils. It is managed by the Department of Education Soil Associations. The workshop offers children the opportunity to discuss healthy eating, local and organic food through the theme of choice.

Schools also need information on good practices in supply of healthy food for school meals. Schools can also improve children's diets and increase their understanding of food through farm visits and classroom activities. Wouldnt it be wonderful if all schools could have gardens so that children can see that food does not come only packages or miraculously appear in stores?

To encourage children to eat healthily for the house why not make soups from vegetables, while children can make their own smoothies in the blender with yogurt and organic milk and fresh or frozen fruit. I bet the kids can taste the difference. All the kids in my family love organic yogurts, and snacks they have organic dried fruit.
