Healthy Pie

Posted on February 1, 2010.
Healthy PieDoes anyone have a recipe for a pie in good health?

Does anyone know a way to get around using all shortening in a pie shell? I try to make a pie crust is a little health. Thank you!

Ingredients
3 / 4 cup whole wheat pastry flour (Heh, I'm not baking .. I just used regular ..)
3 / 4 cup unbleached flour
1 / 4 cup corn oil natural (I just use canola, and a little less than 1 / 4 cup)
A pinch of salt
1 / 2 cup ice water (not sure what the recipe meant, so I used semi-cold water. Worked fine.)

Itinerary:
1. Mix the flours together in a small bowl and freeze for one hour. Freezing the oil in a separate vessel for an hour also. Remove both the freezer and stir the oil into the flour until it makes a crumbly dough.
2. Stir the salt into the ice water and mix the water in the dough. Mix just enough to bind the dough. If it is too dry, add water, just under an hour.
3. I found it easier to simply place the dough in the skillet, and squish it around my hand - Bake as for any recipe for your help.

Sweet Pie Crust

Pastry:
2 cups flour
1 / 4 c. teaspoon salt
1 1 / 2 teaspoon sugar
1 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 / 2 cup ice water

For the dough: In bowl, combine flour, salt and sugar. Add shortening and work through your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and work with your hands until you have a ball of dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Remove dough from fridge and put it on a lightly floured surface. This recipe makes two pie crusts.
For the individual dough: Divide the dough into quarters. Roll dough inches on floured surface into a circle about 5 in diameter and 1/8-thick.

For the whole pie crust: Roll out dough on floured surface into a circle about 14 inches in diameter and 1 / 8 inch thick. Gently fold the dough into two circles, then in half again so that you can lift it without tearing it, and place in a 9 inch pie.
