Holiday Snacks For Kids

Posted on February 18, 2010.
Holiday Snacks For KidsMy kids love Veggies

Me do not do that. My kids really like raw vegetables. Even now they have grown and either in college or live on their own, one of the first things they do when coming home is open the refrigerator while asking at the same time if there are vegetables and dip. The DIP is the key. So I had my children clinging to eat raw vegetables and eat plenty of them. It is not unusual for my three children to eat two heads of cauliflower, a bag and two pounds of carrots in one day when they are at home and always looking for more raw vegetables to eat.

When planning holiday meals, my kids sure I have a tray under vegetables. And unlike many families where the vegetable platter is ignored ours is dug in with gusto, even at the feast of my New Year's Day with about 35-40 family and friends present. For this part I have more trouble with a tray of raw vegetables. I put giant balls of them and leave them after the meal is over for children and adults to snack. When everybody goes home, the last stalk of celery has been eaten. My typical purchase of raw vegetables for the party of my New Year's Day is 3 heads of cauliflower, 4 pounds of carrots, 2 bunches of celery, a bag of radishes, 4 green peppers 4 red peppers, and 3 containers of grape tomatoes. No, I never rests, and yes, I have many other foods.

What is the secret? This DIP. My children have always been ready to eat tons of raw vegetables as long as they dip to go with them. It seems that children are ready to eat healthy foods as they can dip them in something.

Although I can not say my recipe is healthy dip is really tasty, so a little goes a long way. And because my kids eat as much raw vegetables with it I've never worried about the amount of their aid DIP. This is the recipe dip gave me more than 25 years and have made at least once a week since. He make two cups, but a lot of doubles, there is more than enough for all the vegetables I serve at the feast of my New Year's Day.

Vegetable Dip
1 cup sour cream
1 cup Hellmann's Mayo (not replace)
1 tablespoon dill weed generous
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Âľ c. teaspoon onion salt
Âľ c. teaspoon garlic salt
Âľ c. teaspoon Lawry's seasoning salt

Mix everything, cold, and serve, although we do not bother to cool before eating the first time. We mix and digging with our vegetables. The dip keeps well, about two weeks if it lasts that long.

My children can not remember a time that fresh vegetables are not available. I tried to make a point to always keep some cut and ready to eat in the refrigerator. I taught all my children how to dip when they were small. All three of my grown children can not use the dip recipe. Also, when they were old enough, I had help with the cutting and washing vegetables. Above all, I put a good example. At night, when it was time to taste, my children saw me usually snack on raw vegetables and dip. It became a natural thing for them to do too much. Now the biggest thing that my children say they have is finding the time to cut the vegetables for themselves. They buy vegetables, but do not seem to move at their cutting. They say when they are cut, they eat quickly, but they admit they were very spoiled me a point of keeping those who are ready to eat fresh vegetables in the fridge at all times when 'they were younger.
