Draft Science High School Energy Use Did you know that all the foods we eat have a certain type of energy in them. That's why we eat because our bodies need food to convert to energy and allow our muscles to move. The energy is the heat of our body.
How can I see this type of energy food contains a piece, even if we do not eat and digest? We're going to light a piece of food to show he has the energy, otherwise it would not burn and then use the energy to burn to show that it can heat the water.
Obtaining these materials for scientific experiment:
A large coffee can
A smaller can be a soup
A wooden skewer, like that used for barbecue
You now want to drill holes in the sides of the large coffee can. You can use an ice pick with a hammer on a wooden cutting board. Surely your parents do this part. The reason for this is that you can get out a little bit of oxygen.
Little can probably already removed the top, but if it does not go ahead and take off the top. Be careful because it will now have two pointed ends. You can ask your parents for help.
Punch two holes in the top of the small box on the opposite sides. Again that your parents do this piercing.
Put wooden skewers in the holes so that it hangs regularly on both sides.
Pour a small amount of water in the small box. (Approximately 2 / 3 to ½ cup works well.) Use water at room temperature.
Use the thermometer to record temperature.
Now that your parents use a lighter and light the marshmallow on the fire.
Immediately put the coffee can over the marshmallow and put water deposited soup with wooden skewer on top of it. It should hang from the top of the coffee can in the marshmallow. It seems like a campfire that you try to heat the water in the soup can with the marshmallow.
That marshmallow burn until it goes off.
Once the flame goes to the thermometer in the water and record the temperature.
Now you will do this with the peanuts and bread. (Note: the peanut may take a little time to light, but do not give up. It will be light, because it has energy in it.)
Make sure you record your temperature every time and use of new water at room temperature each time you perform this operation.
What you have discovered is that each type of food we eat, burn, because it has energy stored within it and that is what our body uses as fuel. Some foods have more energy inside them than others and that energy can be used to heat water as it used the energy to keep our bodies warm.
What you learn is that everything has energy that is measured in BTUs for each BTU should be able to raise four ounces of water 1 degree so when you see how many degrees the temperature water went up should show you how many BTUs of energy that piece of food contained.
