Mixed Dried Fruit

Posted on February 14, 2010.
Mixed Dried FruitWhy a package of mixed dried fruit have "corn oil" in the ingredients?

The fruit of good flavor, but I was amazed when I read the list of ingredients. It lists the four fruits used, then the corn oil. No other ingredient.

I am a food chemist with great experience and I agree with you, it makes little sense to add corn oil and dried fruits. The only reason I can think of remotely if it is to prevent fruit from sticking together when the oil was sprayed on the surface. In a sense it is a legitimate reason, but there are many other ways to prevent fruit from sticking together.
You can try to contact them if there is an 800 number on the packaging.

edit-for what it's worth has nothing to do with bacteria

Maybe they sprayed the nuts with a spray of corn oil into a shiny and smooth. People working in these large companies are still adding things strange "to make food look good."

used to preserve and protect against bacteria

If you purchased the "always fresh and cool" sort of "nuts" that would be why. You can get more natural dried fruit to your health food store.
