Help fight cavities Candy Special When it comes to dental health, the sweets are often a no-no. Dentists are quick to tell patients to avoid sticky candy, as they contribute significantly to tooth decay and other dental problems.
But researchers have recently found a new way for fans of sweets in their own way. They developed a special type of candy that not only satisfies the sweet tooth of a person, but fights cavities as well.
These new soft comes from Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine in New York who has developed an experimental treatment without fluoride, which is sure to bring a smile to children (and adults) across faces.
The new treatment is packaged as a candy mint, but contains an active compound called CaviStat. The researchers said the compound mimics a component in the saliva of man that neutralizes the acids that destroy tooth in the mouth.
"Unlike regular candies, we want this product is stuck in the teeth," said Mitchell Goldberg, president of Ortek Therapeutics Inc, a privately held company in Roslyn Heights, New York, that licensed the technology from Stony Brook.
"Goldberg said in a telephone interview that sugarless gum to the difference, which fights cavities by temporarily increasing the flow of saliva in the mouth, the mints actively neutralize acids that cause tooth decay," said Julie Steenhuysen Yahoo! News.
The mints, which are marketed under the brand BasicMints were first tested on 200 children in Venezuela. The subjects - aged 10 1 / 2 to 11 - received their adult molars but still had some baby teeth left.
Half the children took two mints each morning and evening after brushing with fluoride toothpaste. Nothing else counted twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and took plain sugarless mint.
"After 12 months, children who took the cavity mint fight against 61.7 per cent had less cavities than the placebo group. The soft mints are designed to be dissolved and chewed into the surfaces of teeth back teeth, where about 90 percent of cavities in children occur, "revealed Steenhuysen.
The study was published in the Journal of Clinical Dentistry and Goldberg is convinced he will not be long before the product is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is certainly good news for us all.
