Young PecanPosted on March 20, 2010. Do ants hurt pecan trees? I have a newly planted sapling pecans, and a large hill of ants has taken up residence around the trunk to the ground. It seems fairly common for a fire ant mound to show around newly planted plants. If there are just a few ants crawling, not a problem. If there is a big pile at the base of the tree is a problem. As another answerer said they can damage the roots and stem of the plant. They are also tunnel through the soil, preventing any contact with the good earth roots. Soaking the soil with water will discourage ants over time, but would not solve your immediate problem. The water hot enough to hurt the ants also damage the tree. An entomologist at the agricultural research station near my bait recommends Amdro fire ant. You sprinkle on the mound and the ants carry it into the hill, kill the queen. The Amdro, applied as indicated, does not hurt plants. Most species of ants will not harm a tree, but the aphids, they will be around the herd. Check for aphids first, and then deal with the ants. ants are not good for the period of the landscape. suspicion that they HATE WATER. A young pecan tree just planted may be injured by fire ants. They eat the roots and causes the tree to the struggle to survive. If you are not familiar with fire ants, if they are, please do not do on you. Some people are very allergic and can have a severe reaction to their bite (s). I do not think an ant would harm the tree. They could even eat the pests.
